BusinessNZ has submitted in opposition to the Copyright (Parody and Satire) Amendment Bill, cautioning that the proposed legislation could act as a 'trojan horse', enabling activist organisations to legally damage legitimate business brands under the guise of free speech. BusinessNZ argues New Zealand's Copyright Act already provides for freedom of expression through section 42, and that this amendment risks opening a new wave of costly litigation, disproportionately harming smaller businesses and deterring investment, without addressing any identifiable gap in the current law.
